GPS vs IP Location: What's the Difference?
If you've ever compared the location a website shows you against where you're actually standing, you've probably noticed they don't always match. That's because "your location" can come from two completely different sources: GPS and your IP address.
How GPS Location Works
GPS (Global Positioning System) uses your device's hardware to receive signals from a network of satellites orbiting the Earth. By measuring how long each signal took to arrive, your device calculates its own position through trilateration. Outdoors, with a clear sky, this is typically accurate to within a few meters. Indoors or in dense cities, phones often blend GPS with Wi-Fi and cell-tower data to fill in the gaps, which is why accuracy can vary.
How IP-Based Location Works
IP geolocation works completely differently. Every device connected to the internet is assigned an IP address by its internet service provider (ISP). Geolocation providers maintain databases that map ranges of IP addresses to a physical location — usually the location of the ISP's infrastructure, a data center, or a regional hub, not your actual address. That's why IP location is normally only accurate to the city or region level, and sometimes it's off entirely if your ISP routes traffic through a hub in another city.

Why They Often Disagree
The most common reason for a mismatch is your ISP's network architecture. Many providers route all their subscribers' traffic through a small number of regional exit points, so everyone connected through that provider in a wide area can appear to be located at a single city. Mobile carriers are especially prone to this. A VPN has the same effect deliberately — it's specifically designed to make your IP location show the VPN server's location instead of your own.
